Nusa Penida Day Trip: What to Book & What to Skip

Nusa Penida Day Trip: What to Book & What to Skip

The most photographed island in Indonesia. Amazing in short bursts, exhausting as a day trip - here is how to do it right.

Ferry from
Sanur (25 min, ~Rp 350.000 return)
Day trip tour
Rp 900.000 - 1.300.000 per person
Must-see
Kelingking, Angel Billabong
Better as
2-day overnight trip

Nusa Penida is the raw, rugged sister island just 25 minutes fast boat east of Sanur. Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach and Diamond Beach are the big four viewpoints. A one-day trip is doable but intense, and most travellers who have been agree that staying 1-2 nights is much better value.

Local tip
The Kelingking Beach walk DOWN to the sand is a serious scramble - steep, hot, and exposed. Most travellers just look from the viewpoint. Go to Diamond Beach if you want a cleaner staircase down to the sand.

West-coast circuit (the Instagram classic)

Kelingking Beach viewpoint, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Crystal Bay. Usually driven as a half-day loop in a scooter or with a driver. All the big photo spots, but lots of driving on bumpy roads and very crowded at peak times.

East-coast circuit (quieter, greener)

Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, Thousand Island viewpoint, Tree House. Less crowded, more walks, better for photographers who want the beaches without the crowds. Requires an earlier start to fit in one day.

Snorkelling and Manta Point

Manta Bay and Manta Point are the reason snorkel tours sell out in high season. You jump off a boat and swim with giant reef mantas (4-5m wingspan, harmless). Tour boat trips run from Crystal Bay or Toyapakeh and usually also stop at Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay and sometimes Wall for beginner wall-diving.

One-day trip (if you insist)

07:30 ferry from Sanur. Meet scooter/driver at the port. Kelingking Beach - 09:00, before the tour buses. Angel’s Billabong + Broken Beach - 10:30. Lunch at Crystal Bay. 13:00 Diamond Beach (if rushing). 16:00 return ferry. Back in Sanur by 17:00.

It is hot, dusty, and long. Worth it if you have exactly one day to spare, but you will leave wishing you had more.

Better: the 2-day trip

Sleep at Penida Colada (backpacker) or Adiwana Warnakali (mid-range) or The Ayana Komodo (luxury). Day 1 west coast, sunset and seafood dinner. Day 2 east coast or snorkel trip, return ferry in the afternoon. Costs are similar to a one-day guided tour but the experience is night and day better.

Ferries and how to book

Operators: Maruti, Idola, Sanur Express, Caspla. All run multiple daily departures from 07:30 to 15:00 from Sanur harbour. Return usually until 16:30. Typical return fare Rp 250.000-400.000. You can book same-day at the harbour but in July/August, pre-book a day ahead.
