Aling-Aling Waterfall is the centrepiece of the Sambangan Waterfall Complex in north Bali — a network of five waterfalls connected by jungle trails and punctuated by natural water slides cut into the mossy volcanic rock. It is the most adventure-focused waterfall experience in Bali: guides lead visitors through the complex, the natural slides deposit you into deep pools, and optional cliff jumps await those who want more. The main Aling-Aling fall drops about 35 metres in a single curtain of white water into a large pool.

About Aling-Aling Waterfall

Sambangan village sits in Buleleng Regency, 15 kilometres southeast of Singaraja. The Sambangan River flows from the high volcanic interior, creating a series of falls and channels through a landscape of black volcanic rock and dense tropical vegetation. Local village guides have developed the circuit over the past decade and manage it collectively — the guide association sets prices and safety rules.

Region: Buleleng Regency, Sambangan village, 15 km southeast of Singaraja
Height: Main fall approximately 35 m; the Sambangan complex contains 5 waterfalls total
River: Sambangan River

The natural water slides are channels worn into the rock by the river over centuries, smoothed further by thousands of visitors. They are not artificial or engineered structures. The longest slide is about 8 metres and deposits you into a 1.5-metre deep pool — an experience that requires a willingness to get moving fast and trust the guide's positioning at the bottom. Lockers are available at the top for valuables. Bring water shoes or sandals that will not slip off in the current.

Vibe: Adventure-focused and social. The natural water slides (aling-aling, kanto, and kembar) attract an energetic crowd. More action park than meditation retreat. A guide is required and part of the fun.

Difficulty & Trail

Moderatedifficulty rating

The main Aling-Aling fall is accessible with a 15–20 minute walk. Full Sambangan complex with all 5 waterfalls, slides, and jumps is a 3–4 hour guided circuit. Water slides are optional — the walk alone is moderate difficulty. Minimum age for slides recommended by local guides is 12 years; cliff jumps are for experienced swimmers only.

Entrance Fee

Rp 30,000 entrance + Rp 100,000–150,000 per person for a guide covering the full Sambangan circuit. Slides and cliff jumps are included in guide fee.

Best Time to Visit

Dry season (May–October) for safer slides and cleaner water. Morning (08:00–10:00) before the day-trippers from Lovina and Singaraja arrive. Wet season increases flow but makes slides faster and potentially more dangerous.

Can You Swim Here?

Yes — multiple pools throughout the complex. The main Aling-Aling pool is the largest and deepest. Natural slides deposit you into pools of 1.5–2 metres depth. Strong swimmers only for the cliff jump options.

What to Bring

  • Swimwear — you will be in water throughout
  • Old clothes you do not mind getting torn on rocks (for slides)
  • Grip sandals that can be worn in water
  • Waterproof action camera or phone case — standard phones often get damaged on slides
  • Change of dry clothes stored in a waterproof bag at the entrance
  • Sunscreen reef-safe — you will be in sun and water
  • Cash for entrance, guide, and cold drinks at the top

Photography Tips

01

Ask your guide to position you for the slide shots — they know the best angles and will happily take photos with your phone.

02

Action camera (GoPro or similar) mounted on chest or head captures the water slide experience authentically.

03

The main Aling-Aling fall from the front viewing platform: wide-angle, include the canyon walls.

04

Long-exposure of the slide itself (without a person) at dawn before guides arrive — silky water channel cut into mossy rock.

Scams & Guide Pressure

The guide requirement at Aling-Aling/Sambangan is legitimate — the complex is large and unsignposted, and the slides can injure inexperienced visitors without guidance. However, some touts outside the main entrance offer lower prices and an unofficial circuit. Stick to the official entrance where guides are vetted. The official guide association has a clear price board at the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the water slides safe at Aling-Aling?
With a guide, they are well-managed — guides assess the water level and position spotters at the pool entry. In rainy season when flow is very high, guides will advise against certain slides. Follow their advice and do not attempt slides without a guide.
Do I have to do the slides to visit Aling-Aling?
No. The main Aling-Aling fall is accessible without doing any slides. If you only want to see the waterfall and not the full adventure circuit, you can do the walk in independently for the Rp 30,000 entrance fee without hiring a guide.
What is the minimum age for the water slides?
Local guides recommend a minimum age of around 12 years for the main slides, and 16+ for the cliff jump. There is no official enforced rule, but guides will assess each person on the day.
How long does the full Sambangan circuit take?
3–4 hours with a guide covering all 5 waterfalls, natural slides, and optional cliff jumps. Half-day commitment from arrival. Budget the full morning for a satisfying experience.
Is Aling-Aling crowded?
Less crowded than south Bali sites but growing in popularity. Weekday mornings are quiet. Weekends (particularly from Singaraja and Lovina day-trippers) bring more groups. Arriving at 08:00–08:30 usually gives a relaxed first hour.
Can non-swimmers visit Aling-Aling?
Yes — the walk and the views are available without entering the water. Non-swimmers can watch the slides from the pool bank, which is impressive in itself. The walk through the Sambangan complex is beautiful even if you stay dry.
