White water rafting in Bali — the basics
Bali has two primary white water rafting rivers: the Ayung River near Ubud and the Telaga Waja River in east Bali near Karangasem. Both offer Grade II–III rapids — enough turbulence for an exciting ride without requiring previous experience. The Ayung is the more popular choice due to its proximity to Ubud and the spectacular jungle gorge scenery it passes through.
No rafting experience is necessary. Operators provide a comprehensive safety briefing, life jackets, helmets and paddles. The guide sits at the back of the raft and steers throughout the journey — guests simply paddle on command. Most groups are 4–6 people per raft.
The Ayung route covers approximately 9–10 kilometres of river, descending 250 metres through a gorge flanked by dense rainforest, ancient stone carvings and at least two legitimate waterfalls that flow directly into the rafting corridor. The whole on-water experience takes around 2.5–3 hours. Door-to-door including briefing, rafting and lunch typically fills a half-day from your hotel.
The Telaga Waja (in east Bali near Rendang) is shorter but has more challenging and consistent rapids — Grade III, fewer quiet stretches and a wilder, less commercialised feel. If you have done the Ayung before, the Telaga Waja offers a step up in intensity.

Best season
Rafting runs year-round on both rivers. The wet season (November–March) brings higher water volume which makes the Ayung's rapids more powerful — a better experience for those who want excitement. In the dry season the water level drops, some rapids become shallower and the flow is gentler. The Telaga Waja holds Grade III water longer into the dry season due to its higher catchment area.
Avoid booking immediately after an extreme rainfall event — operators cancel tours when water is too high and turbid for safe passage, typically after 48+ hours of sustained heavy rain.
Safety considerations
Minimum age: Most Bali rafting operators set a minimum age of 12 years and minimum weight of 35kg. This is a safety requirement, not a commercial restriction — life jackets and helmets need to fit properly.
Swimming ability: You should be able to swim. If you fall out of the raft, the standard procedure is to lie on your back, feet downstream, and float to calm water while your guide retrieves you. Panic swimming against the current is more dangerous than floating.
Health conditions: Rafting is not recommended if you are pregnant, have serious cardiovascular conditions, epilepsy, or recent major surgery. Discuss any health concerns with the operator before booking.
Operator standards: Check that your operator has trained certified guides, rescue kayaks deployed along the route and a working first aid kit on board. Legitimate operators follow FISU (International Rafting Federation) safety guidelines.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need any experience to go white water rafting in Bali?
No experience is needed. The safety briefing covers everything and your guide controls the raft. The Ayung Grade II–III rapids are within comfortable reach of any healthy adult.
Can children go rafting on the Ayung?
Most operators accept children 12+ with a minimum weight of 35kg. Younger children are not accepted due to life jacket fitting requirements. Always check the specific operator's policy when booking.
Will I definitely get wet?
Yes — completely. You will be splashed on every rapid and may fall in at some points. Dress for full immersion.
Is the Ayung River suitable for non-swimmers?
Strong non-swimmers should discuss their comfort level with the operator. You will be in a life jacket throughout. Falling out is possible but guides are positioned to recover you quickly. Weak swimmers should inform their guide before departure.
What time does the rafting start?
Most Ayung operators run morning departures (9am–10am) and afternoon departures (1pm–2pm). Morning is slightly better for water volume and cooler temperatures.
How long is the drive from Canggu to the Ayung put-in?
Approximately 45–55 minutes by car from Canggu or Seminyak. Most operators include hotel pick-up within a Ubud or Canggu radius for a small additional fee.
