Top 12 Sunset Spots in Bali

Top 12 Sunset Spots in Bali

Bali Travel Guide Plus Editorial·2026-04-24·7 min read

Bali faces west on most of its southern coast, which means ocean sunsets are available almost daily from May through October (dry season). Not all sunset spots are equal — some require paying for food or drinks to access the viewpoint, some have queues, and some are simply not as dramatic in practice as the photographs suggest. These 12 are ranked honestly.

Tier 1: Genuinely Spectacular

1. Tanah Lot (Tabanan)

A sea temple on a rock formation at the edge of the ocean — one of Bali's most photographed scenes. Sunset here is exceptional when the sky is clear because the rock silhouettes against the orange sky. Entry: IDR 60,000. Arrives 2 hours before sunset to walk the full tidal area (accessible only at low tide). The crowd is large — 500–1,000 people on weekends in peak season — but the location is large enough to find space. Best viewpoint: the cliff to the north of the main temple, where you can frame the rock without the food stalls behind you.

2. Uluwatu Temple Cliff

Pura Uluwatu sits 70 metres above the ocean on the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula. The view south over the Indian Ocean at sunset is unobstructed. Entry: IDR 50,000. The Kecak fire dance performance begins at 6 pm in the clifftop amphitheatre — IDR 150,000 — and is timed to coincide with sunset. It is worth seeing once. Combine the dance with arriving early (4:30 pm) to walk the cliff-edge paths before the crowds concentrate in the amphitheatre.

3. Single Fin Bar, Uluwatu

The bar/restaurant perched directly above Suluban surf break with an unobstructed view of surfers and the ocean at sunset. No entry fee but you'll spend on food/drinks (budget IDR 100,000–200,000). Tables on the terrace book out after 4 pm on weekends. Arrive by 3:30 pm for a good seat. Sunday sessions have live music.

Tier 2: Very Good

4. Amo Cafe, Canggu

A rooftop bar facing the ocean just south of Batu Bolong beach. Sunset views over the rice fields and sea are excellent. Drinks IDR 70,000–130,000. Arrive by 5 pm to get a terrace table. Not as dramatic as cliff locations but zero effort to access.

5. La Plancha, Seminyak Beach

The original coloured bean bag bar on Seminyak beach. Beach clubs line this stretch but La Plancha is the most photographed for its coloured umbrellas and casual atmosphere. Entry free (drinks from IDR 80,000). The beach faces due west — sunsets in the dry season land directly on the horizon. Crowds start building from 5 pm.

6. Finns Beach Club (Canggu)

Day pass IDR 250,000 (deducted from F&B minimum). Has an elevated viewing platform at the ocean edge. Facilities are excellent. Sunset from here with a cocktail is a legitimately comfortable experience. Best mid-week when the minimum spend is lower and less crowded.

7. Campuhan Ridge Walk (Ubud)

The ridge walk heading north from Warwick Ibah hotel faces west over rice terraces. Sunset from the ridge is the soft, inland version of a Bali sunset — no ocean, but the light across the fields and the silhouette of the coconut trees is excellent for photography. Free, open access, 20-minute walk from central Ubud.

Tier 3: Good but Overhyped or Conditional

8. Potato Head Beach Club (Seminyak)

The most architecturally designed sunset venue in Bali — the circular pool with the sun dropping behind it is the Instagram money shot. But it's expensive (minimum spend IDR 500,000–750,000 with a day pass), crowded, and the pool shot requires the right position before 5 pm. Worth it once for the experience, not for repeat visits.

9. Jimbaran Bay (Seafood Restaurants)

Eating at a Jimbaran bay seafood restaurant on the beach at sunset is a classic Bali experience. The sunset is good, the food is fresh (grilled seafood priced by weight: IDR 150,000–400,000/kg), but the beach itself is not the cleanest. Beware: restaurants at the south end of Jimbaran near the KFC have aircraft taking off overhead from Ngurah Rai airport. Choose restaurants at the northern part of the bay.

10. Karma Kandara Beach (Ungasan)

Private beach accessed by funicular, afternoon light on white sand. The cliff above frames the sun dropping toward the ocean. Funicular: free if spending at restaurant, IDR 50,000 otherwise. The beach faces slightly south-west so sunsets are directional — September/October give the best angle.

11. Pura Batu Bolong (Canggu)

The small sea temple on the rocks at the south end of Batu Bolong beach. Free to approach (no entry to the temple for non-Hindus). The temple silhouette against the water at sunset is attractive without the crowd of Tanah Lot. Very accessible from Canggu accommodation.

12. Bedugul (Lake Bratan at Sunset)

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan — the famous temple on the lake — at sunset is conditional on clear weather. At 1,239m altitude the lake often clouds over by 4 pm. On the 30–40% of evenings when the sky clears, the reflection of the temple in the still lake is extraordinary. Entry: IDR 75,000. Plan a sunset here only if you're already in the Bedugul/Munduk area and the weather looks clear.

Warning

Sunset traffic in Bali is serious. The roads from Seminyak to Tanah Lot, and from Kuta to Uluwatu, are jammed between 4 and 6 pm on any dry-season evening. Add 30–45 minutes to your journey estimate for any sunset destination south of Canggu or west of Ubud. Leave earlier than you think you need to.

Tip

The best light for photography at beach sunset spots is not actually at sunset — it is 10–15 minutes after the sun has set when the sky turns a gradient from deep orange to purple and the exposure is even across the scene. At the moment of sunset, sky and foreground contrast is too extreme for most phone cameras. Wait a few minutes after the sun drops below the horizon for the best photographs.
