Bali with Kids: Family-Friendly Guide

Bali with Kids: Family-Friendly Guide

Bali Travel Guide Plus Editorial·2026-04-24·9 min read

Bali works well for families with children — perhaps better than most Southeast Asian destinations at the same price point. The combination of warm shallow water, abundant swimming pools, easy food, and a culture that genuinely welcomes children makes it forgiving for parents. But the logistics require more planning than a solo or couple trip. This guide covers what actually works with kids in Bali.

Best Areas for Families

Seminyak

The most practical base for families. Beach clubs with proper swimming pools (Potato Head, Ku De Ta, Double Six) are safe for children and provide shade, food, and shallow pool sections. The beach itself has lifeguards. Seminyak has the highest concentration of western-standard restaurants with kid-friendly menus. Traffic is manageable compared to Kuta.

Nusa Dua

The resort enclave on the Bukit Peninsula is specifically designed for families: gated, clean, calm beach, pedestrian promenade, large hotel pools. The Bali Collection shopping mall is nearby. The drawback is the sterile atmosphere — you are in a bubble that feels nothing like real Bali. Best for families who want beach holiday infrastructure with minimal exploration.

Ubud

Works well for families with older children (7+) who are comfortable on foot and interested in cultural activities. Ubud's creative scene (painting classes, mask carving, batik) is excellent for children. The Bali Zoo (IDR 250,000/child, IDR 320,000/adult) and Bali Safari and Marine Park (Gianyar, 30 minutes) are legitimate family activities. Ubud has no beach — good as a 2–3 night side trip from a beach base.

Sanur

Calm lagoon beach (reef protected), shallow water, low surf, no strong currents. The beach promenade is 5km long and flat — safe for children on bikes (rentable along the promenade). More relaxed and less touristy than Seminyak at a lower price point. One of the best areas in Bali for young children.

Child-Friendly Activities

  • Waterbom Park, Kuta: Bali's main waterpark, IDR 400,000–500,000/day for adults, IDR 300,000 for children under 120cm. Well-maintained with dedicated children's sections. Full day activity.
  • Bali Zoo, Gianyar: 75+ species, some touch/feed interactions. IDR 320,000/adult, IDR 250,000/child. 30 minutes from Ubud.
  • Bali Safari and Marine Park: IDR 570,000/adult, IDR 430,000/child. Includes safari bus, water park, and animal shows.
  • Cooking classes, Ubud: Several schools offer family-friendly classes where children participate. Typically IDR 250,000–350,000/person including market visit.
  • Rice terrace walks: Tegalalang and Jatiluwih are pushchair-accessible for part of the route, fully walkable for children over 5.
  • Tanah Lot at sunset: temple on a rock, no swimming, dramatic scenery, free access to the outer area. Easy for all ages.

Health Considerations for Children

Vaccines

  • Hepatitis A: recommended for all travellers; especially important for children who eat street food
  • Typhoid: recommended for stays over 2 weeks or adventurous eating
  • Rabies: recommended for children who may pet animals — stray dogs and monkeys at temples carry rabies
  • Japanese Encephalitis: consider for children staying over a month or in rural areas

Consult a travel medicine clinic 6–8 weeks before departure — vaccine schedules for children differ from adults.

Bali Belly

Children are more susceptible to gastrointestinal illness than adults. Preventive measures: bottled water only (tap water is not safe), hand washing before every meal, avoiding raw vegetables from street stalls, avoiding ice in local warungs (ice at hotels and beach clubs is typically fine — filtered water). Carry oral rehydration sachets (ORS) — available at all Bali pharmacies for IDR 5,000–10,000 each.

Sun and Heat

Bali sits 8° south of the equator. UV intensity at noon is extreme even on overcast days. Children need SPF 50+ sunscreen reapplied every 2 hours and a hat for any outdoor activity. Limit outdoor exposure between 11 am and 2 pm. Dehydration in children happens faster than adults — carry water at all times.

Warning

Stray dogs are common throughout Bali and carry rabies. Teach children not to approach, pet, or attempt to feed any stray dog or monkey. Monkeys at Ubud Monkey Forest, Uluwatu, and Sangeh biting tourists is common. Do not allow children to hold food near monkeys and ensure they are not wearing anything the monkeys might grab (hair clips, glasses, dangling accessories). A bite or deep scratch requires immediate medical attention and rabies post-exposure treatment.

Accommodation for Families

Private villas with pools are often better value for families than hotels:

  • A 2-bedroom villa with a pool in Seminyak or Canggu: IDR 1,200,000–2,500,000/night
  • This is competitive with two hotel rooms, and the villa includes a kitchen, living area, and private pool that children can use freely
  • Look for villas with fenced/gated pools if travelling with children under 5 — open-edge pools require constant supervision
  • Villa staff (typically included) can prepare simple meals for children at any hour

Getting Around with Children

Taxis and ride-shares do not have child seats as standard. Options:

  • Bring your own travel car seat if flying with a child under 5 — this is the safest option
  • Hire a private driver with a car (IDR 500,000–700,000/day) and ask in advance if they can arrange a car seat — some can, none guarantee it
  • Grab/Gojek car service (GrabCar) does not provide car seats; use for short urban trips only
  • Scooters: not recommended for children under 7 or for parents who are not confident riders

Tip

The 3 pm–5 pm window at beaches in Bali is the family sweet spot: the intense midday heat has passed, the light is golden, and the beach is less crowded than the morning hours. Sanur beach in this window, with shallow lagoon water and the promenade for walking, is one of the best low-key afternoons possible for families with young children.
