Tibumana Waterfall sits in a narrow bamboo canyon in Bangli Regency, about 12 kilometres northeast of Ubud. A single drop of approximately 20 metres falls into a clear plunge pool that is one of the most swimming-friendly spots among the accessible Bali waterfalls. The combination of an easy 10-minute walk, a genuinely beautiful pool, and fewer crowds than Tegenungan makes it the recommendation most local guides give to visitors who ask which waterfall to prioritise near Ubud.

About Tibumana Waterfall

The waterfall is accessed from Apuan village in Bangli Regency. The river is a tributary of the Pakerisan system — the same river that carves through the sacred landscape of Gunung Kawi temple. Towering bamboo and dense jungle close in on both sides of the canyon, which stays shaded and cool even at midday. The pool is clear and relatively shallow near the edges but reaches chest depth in the centre.

Region: Bangli Regency, Apuan village, 12 km northeast of Ubud
Height: Approximately 20 m single drop
River: Pakerisan River system

The infrastructure at Tibumana is minimal by design — concrete stairs down, a small wayang at the top, and not much else. This restraint is part of why it stays less crowded than Tegenungan. No drone photography is permitted over the Hindu shrine near the pool. Locals use the spring for ritual bathing and there is often fresh floral offering placed at the base. Be respectful of the religious context and do not touch or remove offerings.

Vibe: Calm and jungly. Fewer selfie sticks than Tegenungan. The pool is narrow and enclosed by towering bamboo — a genuinely peaceful place early in the morning.

Combine With Nearby Attractions

1

Ubud rice terraces (Tegallalang) (20 min southwest)

Photography Tips

01

The enclosed canyon creates a natural frame — shoot from the pool edge looking up at the fall for a dramatic perspective.

02

Morning light (before 09:00) hits the top of the fall when the sun is low, creating a golden top edge with shadow below. Very photogenic.

03

Long exposure from the boulders at the pool edge — the enclosed space means you can often rest a camera on a rock without a tripod.

04

Bamboo stalks on either side make excellent foreground framing elements.

05

Wide-angle lens captures the full height of the fall and both canyon walls.

Scams & Guide Pressure

Tibumana is one of the more straightforward waterfall experiences in Bali with minimal pressure. Occasional informal parking collectors on the access road may ask for Rp 5,000–10,000 — this is common in Bali and paying Rp 5,000 is easier than arguing. The official entrance is at the top of the stairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Tibumana compare to Tegenungan?
Tibumana is narrower, taller, and much less crowded. Tegenungan is wider, more powerful after rain, and more famous. Most guides recommend Tibumana for a calmer experience and Tegenungan if you want the iconic wide-fall shot.
Can I visit Tibumana and Tegenungan in the same morning?
Yes — they are about 20 minutes apart. A standard approach: Tibumana first at 07:30 when it is quietest, then Tegenungan at 09:30 as a second stop before heading to Ubud.
Is Tibumana suitable for young children?
Yes. The path is gentle, the pool is calm, and the descent is only 5–10 minutes. It is one of the most family-friendly waterfalls in the Ubud area.
What is the water quality like at Tibumana?
Generally clean and clear, especially in dry season. After heavy overnight rain the water may run slightly brown from upstream sediment — in this case the pool is still swimmable but less visually appealing.
Is there a changing room at Tibumana?
A basic changing shelter exists near the entrance. It is not a full facility — come in swimwear under your clothes for the easiest experience.
How early is too early to visit Tibumana?
The site generally opens around 07:00. Arriving at 07:00–07:30 before the first tour groups (which typically arrive from 09:30 onwards) gives you the best chance of quiet photos.
