Tukad Cepung Waterfall is unique in Bali for a reason that has nothing to do with the waterfall itself. The fall — about 10 metres — drops inside a narrow slot canyon carved 20 metres deep into the volcanic rock east of Ubud. A crack in the ceiling of the canyon allows a shaft of sunlight to penetrate between roughly 09:00 and 11:00 each morning, hitting the fine mist thrown off by the waterfall and illuminating it as a tangible column of light in the dim green air. The result is one of the most unusual and photographed natural light scenes in all of Bali.

About Tukad Cepung Waterfall

The waterfall sits in Tembuku village, Bangli Regency, about 20 kilometres east of Ubud. The canyon is carved by the Tukad Cepung — a small but persistent tributary that has, over centuries, cut deeply into the volcanic plateau. The canyon walls are completely covered in moss, maiden-hair fern, and small fig roots, giving the interior a prehistoric quality.

Region: Bangli Regency, Tembuku village, 20 km east of Ubud
Height: Approximately 10 m — small fall but in a narrow canyon 20 m deep
River: Tukad Cepung (a small tributary of the Melangit River)

The path from the entrance descends through scrubby riverside jungle before entering the canyon mouth. The final section inside the canyon involves wading through ankle to knee-deep water over slippery boulders — water shoes or sandals are essential. The canyon narrows to about a metre wide at its tightest point before opening into the final chamber with the fall. There are no facilities inside the canyon. The experience rewards visitors who take their time and observe quietly.

Vibe: Dramatic and otherworldly. The canyon is narrow — sometimes a metre wide — with a crack in the ceiling that throws a concentrated beam of sunlight onto the waterfall between roughly 09:00 and 11:00 on clear mornings. Unique in Bali.

Difficulty & Trail

Easydifficulty rating

A 10–15 minute walk from the entrance, including rock scrambling inside the canyon itself. The canyon floor involves wading through ankle-to-knee-deep water for the last 50–100 metres. Slippery boulders inside. The light-beam effect requires good timing and dry weather.

Entrance Fee

Rp 15,000 per person (2025 rate). Parking Rp 5,000.

Best Time to Visit

Between 09:00 and 11:00 on a clear sunny day for the famous light beam. Overcast days exist without any light beam effect. This is the single most timing-sensitive waterfall in Bali — plan around the light, not around crowd avoidance.

Can You Swim Here?

Limited. The canyon pool is shallow (ankle to knee depth at most sections). The experience is wading through the canyon, not swimming in a pool. You will get wet feet regardless.

What to Bring

  • Water shoes or sandals you can walk in water in — you will wade through the canyon
  • Dry bag or waterproof phone case — water is unavoidable at ankle level for the last stretch
  • Change of shoes for after
  • Patience — if you arrive at 09:30 and the canyon is already full of people, wait 15 minutes for a clearing
  • Tripod if you want the long-exposure light beam shot (compact travel tripod fits the canyon)

Photography Tips

01

The light beam arrives between 09:00 and 11:00 when the sun angle sends a shaft through the crack. A thin mist from the waterfall makes the beam visible as a tangible column of light.

02

Long exposure (1–4 seconds) on a tripod captures both the smooth water and the light beam simultaneously.

03

Position yourself in the canyon with the shaft of light between you and the camera for a silhouette-in-beam shot.

04

Shoot straight up through the crack for an unusual perspective — the open sky visible through the narrow slit of rock above.

05

The canyon walls are covered in moss and fern — macro detail shots work well in the soft indirect light.

Scams & Guide Pressure

Tukad Cepung is a low-pressure tourist site. The most common issue is unofficial guides who join your walk uninvited and then request payment at the fall. If you do not want a guide, say politely at the entrance: "terima kasih, kami tidak membutuhkan pemandu." The canyon route is straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time exactly is the light beam at Tukad Cepung?
Between approximately 09:00 and 11:00 on clear sunny mornings. The exact timing shifts slightly by season. By 11:30 the sun has moved past the optimal angle. There is no light beam effect on overcast days or in the afternoon.
Is the light beam effect always present?
Only on clear, sunny days when the sun angle is right. Bali's weather is unpredictable, especially in rainy season. Check the forecast before making a special trip — a cloudy morning means you see a waterfall but not the famous light.
Can I visit Tukad Cepung without getting wet?
No. The last 50–100 metres inside the canyon require wading through ankle-to-knee-deep water. Wear shoes you are comfortable getting wet in.
Is Tukad Cepung worth visiting for the waterfall alone (not the light)?
The canyon is beautiful regardless of the light — mossy walls, narrow passage, ferns overhead. It is worth the entrance fee even without the beam. But if you are making a special trip, time it for the light.
How long does Tukad Cepung take?
About 1–1.5 hours total including the walk in, time in the canyon, and the walk out. The canyon itself rewards slow photography — 30–45 minutes in the canyon is not unusual for photographers.
Is it crowded inside the canyon?
The canyon is narrow and can hold only 5–8 people comfortably at a time. Weekends between 09:00 and 11:00 can create queues at the canyon entrance. Weekday mornings are significantly quieter.
