Tukad Cepung Waterfall is unique in Bali for a reason that has nothing to do with the waterfall itself. The fall — about 10 metres — drops inside a narrow slot canyon carved 20 metres deep into the volcanic rock east of Ubud. A crack in the ceiling of the canyon allows a shaft of sunlight to penetrate between roughly 09:00 and 11:00 each morning, hitting the fine mist thrown off by the waterfall and illuminating it as a tangible column of light in the dim green air. The result is one of the most unusual and photographed natural light scenes in all of Bali.
About Tukad Cepung Waterfall
The waterfall sits in Tembuku village, Bangli Regency, about 20 kilometres east of Ubud. The canyon is carved by the Tukad Cepung — a small but persistent tributary that has, over centuries, cut deeply into the volcanic plateau. The canyon walls are completely covered in moss, maiden-hair fern, and small fig roots, giving the interior a prehistoric quality.
The path from the entrance descends through scrubby riverside jungle before entering the canyon mouth. The final section inside the canyon involves wading through ankle to knee-deep water over slippery boulders — water shoes or sandals are essential. The canyon narrows to about a metre wide at its tightest point before opening into the final chamber with the fall. There are no facilities inside the canyon. The experience rewards visitors who take their time and observe quietly.
Difficulty & Trail
A 10–15 minute walk from the entrance, including rock scrambling inside the canyon itself. The canyon floor involves wading through ankle-to-knee-deep water for the last 50–100 metres. Slippery boulders inside. The light-beam effect requires good timing and dry weather.

Photography Tips
The light beam arrives between 09:00 and 11:00 when the sun angle sends a shaft through the crack. A thin mist from the waterfall makes the beam visible as a tangible column of light.
Long exposure (1–4 seconds) on a tripod captures both the smooth water and the light beam simultaneously.
Position yourself in the canyon with the shaft of light between you and the camera for a silhouette-in-beam shot.
Shoot straight up through the crack for an unusual perspective — the open sky visible through the narrow slit of rock above.
The canyon walls are covered in moss and fern — macro detail shots work well in the soft indirect light.
