Pura Ulun Danu Beratan sits at the edge of Lake Beratan at 1,240 metres elevation in the Bedugul highlands of north-central Bali. The temple appears to float on the lake, with its 11-tiered meru (pagoda tower) reflected in the still water on calm mornings. It is one of the most recognised images in Bali tourism and has been depicted on the Indonesian Rp 50,000 banknote since 1995. The cool mountain air, frequent morning mist, and lake setting make it distinctly different from Bali's coastal temples.
History & Significance
Pura Ulun Danu Beratan was built in 1633 by the Mengwi king I Gusti Agung Putu as part of the royal Mengwi kingdom's religious complex. The temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes and rivers, who is believed to reside in Lake Beratan. Balinese rice farmers historically made offerings here to seek blessing for their irrigation systems. The temple remains an active site of worship for the subak irrigation communities of north Tabanan.
The Bedugul area sits in a volcanic crater lake system surrounded by forest. Lake Beratan, Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan form a trio of crater lakes in the highlands north of Tabanan. The temple's meru tower has 11 tiers representing the Hindu concept of the layered universe. The complex also contains a Buddhist stupa, reflecting the syncretic religious culture of early Bali.

From the south (Denpasar/Kuta): 50 km, approximately 90 minutes. Grab cars serve the route. What to See: Highlights
- The 11-tiered meru tower photographed from the main viewing jetty at the lake's edge
- Morning mist over the lake (most common October–April) creating an ethereal atmosphere
- The small boat trips on Lake Beratan available from the temple grounds
- The gardens and flower market at Kebun Raya Eka Karya botanical garden (1 km away)
- The cool highland climate — a relief from coastal Bali heat
- Lake Tamblingan (15 km northwest) for a quieter, more pristine lake experience without the crowds
Best Time to Visit
Early morning (07:00–09:00) is best for mist on the lake and soft light on the meru tower. The clouds and mist clear by mid-morning in dry season. In wet season (October–April) mist and low cloud are common throughout the day. Avoid midday on weekends when domestic tourism is at its peak. The grounds are less crowded on weekday mornings.
Common Scams & What to Watch For
The site is well managed and scam activity is lower than at some southern Bali temples. Boat trips on the lake are available from touts near the jetty — agree on a price before boarding. The standard trip around the lake takes about 20 minutes. Souvenir stalls at the exit are concentrated and persistent; prices are negotiable.
