Blahmantung Waterfall drops approximately 95 metres from the forested slopes of Gunung Batukaru in Tabanan Regency — making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Bali. It sits within the protected Batukaru nature reserve, accessed via an informal forest trail that requires a local guide. Unlike most Bali waterfalls which are visited by hundreds of tourists daily, Blahmantung remains genuinely remote. The surrounding forest is old-growth volcanic montane jungle: moss-covered boulders, giant fern stands, and the kind of deep forest silence that is disappearing from most of Bali.

About Blahmantung Waterfall

The Yeh Mawa River descends from the second-highest volcano in Bali, Gunung Batukaru (2,276 m), through the densely forested western highlands before dropping over the Blahmantung ledge. The catchment receives heavy rainfall from both the rainy season monsoon and the orographic effect of the mountain — meaning the fall rarely runs dry. The Batukaru reserve protects some of the last significant old-growth forest in Bali.

Region: Tabanan Regency, Penebel subdistrict, western highlands, near Pura Batukaru
Height: Approximately 95 m — one of the tallest waterfalls in Bali
River: Yeh Mawa River, flowing from the slopes of Gunung Batukaru

Access from the main road requires approximately 30–45 minutes of forest walking on an unmarked path. No entrance gate, ticket booth, or developed infrastructure exists at the trailhead. This is intentional — the Penebel subdistrict has chosen not to commercialise the site, which keeps it in pristine condition. Visitors who do make the effort are rewarded with a waterfall experience that feels completely removed from the tourist infrastructure of south and east Bali.

Vibe: Wild, powerful, and genuinely remote. Almost no tourist infrastructure. The surrounding forest is part of the protected Batukaru nature reserve. A different Bali from the southeast tourist corridor.

Difficulty & Trail

Moderate to Harddifficulty rating

A 30–45 minute walk on an informal trail through dense forest from the nearest vehicle access point. Some steep and uneven sections. No concrete steps — natural paths only. A local guide is strongly recommended due to unmarked trail junctions in the forest.

Entrance Fee

No official entrance gate (as of 2025). Voluntary donation to the local village (Rp 20,000–30,000 recommended). If hiring a guide: Rp 100,000–150,000 per person.

Best Time to Visit

Rainy season (November–March) for maximum flow — the 95-metre drop at full power is extraordinary. Dry season the flow reduces but remains impressive year-round due to altitude rainfall. Always morning visit (08:00–10:00) in the cool forest.

Can You Swim Here?

Limited. The base area is rocky and the energy of a 95-metre fall creates turbulent water and strong mist. Wading at the edge is possible. No calm pool for relaxed swimming.

Photography Tips

01

The full 95 metres requires an ultrawide lens or stepping back 50–60 metres — the canyon provides some natural framing but is densely vegetated.

02

The mist from the base creates atmospheric haze in wide shots — include foreground ferns or rocks to add depth.

03

Long exposure from a stable boulder position: 1/4–1/8 sec for silky water effect.

04

The approach through the dense Batukaru forest has excellent light in early morning — tall trees, filtered green light, mossy boulders.

05

Drone photography is not permitted in protected forest areas — respect this rule.

Scams & Guide Pressure

Blahmantung has minimal tourist infrastructure and correspondingly little pressure. The main risk is trail navigation — the forest is dense and without a guide, wrong turns are easy. Do not attempt without a guide if you are unfamiliar with forest trail navigation. There is no phone signal in the forest below the trailhead. Tell someone your planned return time before heading in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I arrange a guide for Blahmantung?
Ask at the nearest village (Penebel or Wongaya Gede) — local residents know the trail and guides are available. Alternatively, ask your hotel or a Ubud tour operator to arrange a guide in advance. WhatsApp contact +628824569741 for recommendations.
Is Blahmantung crowded?
Very rarely. This is one of the least-visited major waterfalls in Bali due to its remoteness and lack of promotion. On most days you will be the only visitors. That is either the draw or a deterrent depending on what you are looking for.
Can I visit Blahmantung independently?
It is possible but not recommended. The forest trail is unmarked in sections, there is no signage, and the phone signal is unreliable. First-time visitors should hire a guide for safety.
Is Blahmantung really 95 metres tall?
Various sources cite heights between 85 and 100 metres — "approximately 95 metres" is the most frequently cited estimate. It is significantly taller than most Bali waterfalls. The full height is only appreciated from a distance.
How does Blahmantung compare to Nungnung?
Both are tall, powerful, and not swimming destinations. Nungnung has much better infrastructure (500 concrete steps) and is closer to Ubud. Blahmantung is taller, wilder, and requires a genuine hiking commitment. Nungnung is for most visitors; Blahmantung is for adventurous ones.
What is the best time of year for Blahmantung?
December through February for maximum power. The Batukaru slopes receive some of the highest rainfall in Bali, so even in "dry" season the fall remains impressive. The surrounding Batukaru forest is permanently green and alive throughout the year.
